About The Low Five Photography

The Low Five is the Internet home of Atlanta-based photographer Steven Ricard. I work with both film and digital cameras. My primary cameras at the moment are a Canon Rebel T1i DSLR and a Minolta X-570 film camera, however, I have also been known to use pinholes, toy cameras, 1950s box cameras, and anything else I can get my hands on.

For information about my work or to schedule services, feel free to call me at 404.969.LOW5 (5695). Please use the Contact page to send me an email or to find additional ways that you can get in touch with me and/or find my work on the web.

About this month

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Life has gotten in the way of photography for me over the last month or so, and unfortunately, I haven’t been able to spend as much time with my camera as I would like to.  I’m hoping things start to get back to normal soon, and regular posts along with it.

In other news, last week’s Chairman post was my 100th post on the site.  Certainly a milestone that I had been looking forward to, but it didn’t get the attention that it deserved.

Changes are Coming

The new watermark from garysimon.net.

As you can probably see without much effort, there’s been a lack of posts since last Sunday, February 28.  This was in large part due to the birth of our second child last weekend.  In addition to that, I’ve been going back and forth in my head about how I want to work on this site going forward, and I just wanted to share some of that here.

For starters, the watermark logo that I purchased is complete and you’ll soon begin to see it on all photos that I own the copyright on.  The logo was created by Gary Simon at garysimon.net for $99.  It’s fairly simple and straightforward, almost to the point where I feel like I could have come up with it myself, but graphics like this are certainly not my cup of tea.

As far as the site itself goes, I’ve decided to stop the Fave 5 posts as a weekly post.  I think trying to conform to that type of post once a week damages the quality of what the post could be, I’m thinking particularly of the Apple iPad post from last month, as an example of when an idea is taken too far and doesn’t really fit the content that’s being tied to it. Beyond that, I’m still planning to do at least three or four posts a week.  As of right now, the only guaranteed post that will continue is the Photo of the Week, where I showcase a photo from my portfolio, usually from that week.

Other changes include restructuring and changing the way tags are used, and if I do nothing else, the store page WILL go live this week.  Now that I have the watermark ready, I’m also going to refine the portfolio portion of the site, and clear out some of the crap.

Since I’ve decided to put the financial planning classes on hold, I’m hoping to be able to dedicate more time to this site and finally putting it together the way I envision it.  In addition to the regular posts, I’ll be going page by page to fine tune things the way I think they should be.  Stay tuned for the changes to come, and check back tomorrow with a special post with some photos of the new little guy in the family.

About Today’s Downtime and Posting Schedule

Monday, January 4th, 2010

If you've seen the duck today, I'm really sorry, but geez, isn't that adorable?

If you’ve tried accessing the site today and had problems, I apologize.  It seems to be a larger issue that our hosting provider was experiencing.  The downtime has given me an opportunity to think of two new weekly posts.  Starting next week and for each week going forward, the list below will be my regular posting schedule.  The random posts that I’ve been doing will continue for when I find something that I can’t wait until the chosen day to share.

  • Sundays: Photo of the Week
  • Mondays: Reader Recap (Finds from Around the Web)
  • Tuesdays: Feature
  • Thursdays: Feature
  • Fridays: Camera & Photography Deals

As Porky Pig would say, “That’s all folks!”  Barring any further issues on the hosting end of things, I hope to have a new feature up sometime tomorrow.

Site is live!

After some serious soul-searching, I have decided that now is the time that I start taking my writing and photography seriously and turn these little hobbies into something more. Check back soon for more updates and a complete revamping of this currently generic looking website!
