Tricky lighting was a challenge.
This past weekend, my family and I were treated to an afternoon at the circus. One of the pics from the set was featured in this week’s Photo of the Week post from a couple days ago, but I wanted to share some of the others as well.
Now before anyone gets their panties in a wad, please know that I am a very strong believer in animal rights and I do not support the mistreatment of animals in any manner. My wife likes to joke that I talk to and treat our dogs like they were human. Anyway, the tickets to the circus were a gift, and since I also don’t believe in wasting money, we went. We did not, however, fork over $12 for a bag of prepackaged cotton candy, or any of their other ridiculously overpriced food or trinkets.
Since we were going to be there anyway, I took it as an opportunity to get some practice in with my camera. Since I didn’t know where our seats were going to be, I brought all three of my lenses, as well as my Gorillapod. As it turned out, we were located on one of the ends of the area in the upper level. With that in mind, all of the photos that you’ll see below were taken using a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 telephoto lens.
I honestly didn’t expect to get any decent pictures out of this because of our seat location, the relatively low lighting of most of the arena and the fact that the lowest aperture I could get was f/4, but I did the best I could. To compensate for all of this, I jacked the ISO up to 3200 for the majority of the show. Stability was also an issue for me. I didn’t have anywhere to set up my Gorillapod, so for the most part, I tried to use it as a prop against my chest and shoulders, but as you’ll see from the photos below, they aren’t as crisp as they could have been if I had had a better way to eliminate camera shake altogether.
Okay, well that’s enough yapping. I hope that you enjoy the pics that after the jump, and I welcome any constructive criticism and suggestions. As always, click the photo for a larger view.
